The Dove – a picture of love, peace, reconciliation, anointing, unity and beauty. As the beloved looks upon her lover in Solomon’s love song she cries –
“His eyes are like doves, soft and bright,
but deep-set, brimming with meaning, like wells of water.”
Song of Solomon (MSG)
But the beloved’s vision of her lover as a Dove is not one sided – for he sees her in the same way! In the realms of the mystical the Dove is seen as a metaphor for the soul. It is the soul, as the Dove, that has that homing instinct – seeking the divine county and the Father’s house – where The Lover waits with the welcome –
“You’re so beautiful, my darling, so beautiful, and your dove eyes are veiled by your hair as it flows and shimmers, like a flock of goats in the distance streaming down a hillside in the sunshine.”
(Song of Solomon (MSG)
“Let me in, dear companion, dearest friend, my dove, consummate lover!
(Song of Solomon (MSG)
Oh, get up, dear friend, my fair and beautiful lover—come to me! Come, my shy and modest dove— leave your seclusion, come out in the open. Let me see your face, let me hear your voice. For your voice is soothing and your face is ravishing.
Song of Solomon (MSG)
I truly believe that the essence of Christianity is to live in such a relationship with the Divine Lover. A place where we are captivated by His eyes, enthralled by his heart and blinded by His love.
But in the poetic song know as Psalm 68 there is an enigmatic “Dove” statement which seem to confound Bible Commentators.
“Adonai gives the command;
the women with the good news are a mighty army.
Kings and their armies are fleeing, fleeing,
while the women at home divide the spoil.
Even if you lie among the animal stalls,
there are wings of a dove covered with silver
and its plumes with green gold.”
Psalm 68:12 – 15 (OJB)
Might I be so bold as to apply a prophetic and spiritual meaning to this statement? I believe there is today a mighty army – a hidden army – an unseen force that is preparing to fight loves battle! And they are the women of God! I believe when they arise Kings and their Armies will flee – captives will be set free, strongholds will be broken and walls will fall down! I believe that when they are revealed – in the words of the Song of Solomon –
“All heads turn in awe and admiration!”
Song of Solomon 4 (MSG)
As The Divine Lover looks today on his beloved [and this includes both men and women] – he still cries out –
“There’s no one like her on earth, never has been, never will be. She’s a woman beyond compare. My dove is perfection!”
Song of Solomon 6 (MSG)
Oh for the revelation in your life and mine that this is how our lover God sees us! For from that place we can face anything!
It is, I believe, when this mighty army is revealed, not only the warriors of love, but loves broken warriors, together, will share in the spoils! For both in the place of victory and the place of brokenness [those who “lie among the animal stalls”] we find The Dove, The Holy Spirit – leading, empowering, renewing and restoring. He is our Dove- but we are also his! And he leads us forward to victory and reward!
I have friends in both the active warrior and broken warrier categories of the King’s army today. May we be encouraged that we will together share in the spoils of victory. But even more than the spoils – be assured he will forever be – “Dear companion, dearest friend, my dove, consummate lover! ” And as we, with the beloved, gaze again into the eyes of our Heavenly Dove – may we see and experience in them the unquenchable “wells of water” – the life of His Holy Spirit!
